  • hyperglycemia develops during pregnancy because of some secretion of placental hormones.
  • a women don't have diabetes before pregnancy, it usually appears in middle of pregnancy. if it left untreated it can cause many complications in mother and baby.
1. Who are at risk of having gestational diabetes ?


  • diabetes in a first degree relative.
  • obesity
  • continously glycosuria 
  • previous history of glucose intolerance
  • age over 30.
    *placental hormones[hpgh,progesterone,oestrogen] higher levels of these hormones reduce the effectiveness of insulin in body.

2. How can i detect diabetes in pregnancy?

  • doctor will do glucose tolerance test and will check glucose level in body after given time.
  • in that you have to drink a sweet drink contains 75mg glucose, the blood glucose level will rise but it should come to normal after given time, then result will be compared with normal result.
  • you will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes if your values      are :                           1. fasting: 90mg/dL(normal level)
                 2. after 1 hour: 165mg/dL
                 3. after 2 hours : 145mg/dL
                 4: after 3 hours : 125mg/dL
3: what are complications of gestational diabetes:

  • it will directly affect mother and its baby as getting more glucose during intrauterine life baby will grow larger(macrosomia),but after delivery complications are hypoglycemia to baby due to higher requirements lesser supply of glucose.
  • as well as mother will be more prone to infections.
4. prevention techniques for diabetes: 

  • complete regular screening of glucose test between 24 to 28 weks of gestation.
  • taking participation in exercises and activity.
  • managing diet plans
  • avoiding complications.
